Jonas Lossl eager to create new memories with Huddersfield Town

The Danish goalkeeper was a fixture in the Terriers’ Premier League years, missing only seven matches across two seasons.

He looked like he had cut his ties when he left for Everton last summer, but returned on loan in January to cover for Kamil Grabara, who suffered concussion and a bleed on the brain.

And while the 31-year-old admits the romanticism of returning to former glories was part of what lured him back, taking a pay cut to return, he knows the task now is rather different.

Lossl has come back into a side fighting relegation from the Championship, and while they were starting to show promising signs at home before the season was put on hold by the coronavirus, they will still have a job to finish if the Football League are able to complete the season as they wish.

“I’m happy to be here,” said Lossl. “The coach (manager Danny Cowley) has a plan with me and I’m just trying to play my game.

“Everyone here knows my game, so I’m trying to fill that role and I’m just really happy to be back here.

“The future is the only thing on my mind, the rest is the past and a past I’m really proud of. That made me come back. But this is a different task, about building a great team and a mentality.

“I have a fantastic impression now of the Cowley brothers and I’m really happy to be back working with Paul Clements (the goalkeeping coach).

“I see this team going somewhere.”

Quite how long Lossl will be around to witness its development remains to be seen.

Grabara is also on loan from Merseyside, and due back at Liverpool in the summer. With Lossl still to make his Everton debut and not even a regular on the bench with Carlo Ancelotti rotating him game-to-game with Marten Stekelenburg, a permanent switch might seem logical but interim chief executive Mark Devlin cast doubt on that last month.
“We love having Jonas here and it’s great to have him here – he’s a great character,” he said. “But, being really honest about it, it is hugely unlikely we would be able to afford to keep Jonas past the end of the season.”
