Jose Semedo signs new one-year deal with Sheffield Wednesday

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY cult hero Jose Semedo has agreed to stay on at Hillsborough for a sixth season after signing a new one-year deal.

The Portuguese midfield pivot, who joined the club from Charlton Athletic five years ago, is likely to be again utilised as a squad player in 2016-17, having featured just 16 times for the club last term, with his only start in the Championship so far in 2016 coming in the 2-1 final-day loss at Wolves.

But the 31-year-old, who has made 156 appearances for the club, is seen a valuable squad member, with head coach Carlos Carvalhal showing no hesitation to offer him fresh terms.

Wednesday, have brought in Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher late last week, have also brought in highly-rated Spurs teenage midfielder Charlie Hayford, 19, following his release from the North London outfit.

On signing a one-year deal, Hayford said: This is a massive football club and one that would appeal to any young footballer looking to make his mark in the game.

“I have no qualms about leaving the south for the north as this is a club and place that really appeals.”

Hayford’s arrival follows that of fellow teenager Jordan Thorniley, who signed a one-year deal on Saturday following his recent release by Everton.

The 19-year-old centre-back said: “I feel I learned my trade with Everton and now I am ready to go to the next level,” said the 19-year-old centre-half.

“I am very ambitious and hopefully I can achieve my goals with Wednesday.”
