Karlan Grant and Steve Mounie to sit out Huddersfield Town's season opener

Forwards Karlan Grant and Steve Mounie will not feature in Carlos Corberan's first competitive game as Huddersfield Town coach because the Spaniard wants to focus his efforts on players more likely to stay at the club.

West Bromwich Albion are thought to have had one bid turned down for wide attacker Grant, and are expected to return with another, whilst Trabzonspor have been linked with a move for targetman Mounie.

Both are training with the Terriers, but neither will take part in Saturday's League Cup first-round tie at home to Rochdale.

“I want to give more minutes to the players I feel want to be involved in the squad in the future,” explained coach Corberan, who succeeded Danny Cowley at the end of last season. “Karlan and Steve Mounie are not going to be involved because they have options to be in other squads.

“I was thinking more to give minutes to the players that I feel want to stay in the team and trying to improve our ideas and develop the ideas we have with the players I feel have more options to stay with our squad.”

As to whether he was resigned to the pair leaving, Corberan dodged the question.

“It's an option that the club knew about when I arrived and I knew I had to live with this situation,” he said. “Both players continue working with us but I think for now I want to prepare more the players that I feel can help us and who want to be with the team.”

So far the only additions to a Terriers squad which has lost 12 players, including loanees, from last season have been striker Danny Ward and on-loan goalkeeper Joel Pereira.

Robbie Gotts – a youngster Corberan worked with in his previous role as one of Marcelo Bielsa's Leeds United assistants and the club's under-23 coach – and Spanish right-back Pipa have been linked with moves to Huddersfield.

Corberan would only say: “I don't want to be disrespectful to another club. I know both players but I don't want to talk with players that are part of other clubs and I have to be focused about the players we have right now. Of course if we have any movement in the market I will be very open to talk with you about the skills these players have.”

The English transfer window closes at 11pm on October 5. Football League are allowed until 5pm on the 16th for domestic-only transfers.

Jonathan Hogg, Adam Diakhaby and Isaac Mbenza will play their first football for Corberan as he looks to build up their fitness rather than necessarily play the side most likely to win.
