Keiren Westwood boost for Sheffield Wednesday tempered by news that Glenn Loovens faces lay-off

Sheffield Wednesday captain Glenn Loovens has been ruled out of this weekend's Championship clash with Brentford.

The Owls centre-half has been carrying a groin strain for some time, and was rested for Saturday’s win at Birmingham City.

With Tom Lees and Michael Turner now back fit, to provide competition alongside Vincent Sasso and Sam Hutchinson at centre-half, Dutchman Loovens will be given time off to solve the problem.

“He has played in the last few weeks with an injury,” said owls head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

“We needed him to play because we didn’t have another centre-half at that moment.

“He is a captain of the team and leads by example. All the time he tried to play.

“Now, because we have recovered some players, it’s the time for him to recover 100 per cent. He is still out at this moment.”

But there was good news for Wednesday, as goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is fit to play against Brentford, despite being stretchered off at St Andrew’s with a neck injury.

“He has trained this week and will be okay for Saturday,” Carvalhal told The Yorkshire Post.

Hutchinson and Kieran Lee face fitness tests ahead of the weekend.
