Leeds United 1 Huddersfield Town 4: Terriers stun Elland Road with superb display

The Terriers romped to their biggest win at Elland Road in 55 years courtesy of a stunning second half display.

Level at the break thanks to Mark Hudson’s equaliser shortly before the break, Town ripped Leeds apart on the restart as goals from Nahki Wells, Harry Bunn and Karim Matmour clinched the points.

It was Huddersfield’s biggest win at the home of their neighbous since September, 1960, and their second biggest of all time, the 4-0 triumph of 1925-26.

For Leeds, it was a sorry way to be brought back to earth after three consecutive wins. Not least because it was the hosts who had gone ahead after the visitors had spurned an early opening.

That great chance for David Wagner’s men had come on ten minutes when they were awarded a spotkick after Joe Lolley’s mazy run was ended by a Sol Bamba foul.

Wells stepped forward and drilled the ball firmly low to the goalkeeper’s right but could only look on in horror as Silvestri saved.

The let-off for Leeds was followed by the hosts going ahead midway through the half when Dallas headed in at the far post after being picked out by Liam Bridcutt.

Town equalised four minutes before the interval when Mark Hudson met a Jamie Paterson corner and headed into the net.

Clearly buoyed by that leveller, the visitors started the second half on top and Silvestri had to be in the right place to hold a Philip Billing shot.

Leeds gradually grew into the second half and Mirco Antenucci curled a shot just wide after a swift break but it was Huddersfield who netted the all-important third goal of the afternoon.

Once again, it was a corner that caused problems for the hosts as Leeds could only half clear and Harry Bunn rifled a shot into the net via the inside of the post.

The game was up for Leeds now and Town added a third 17 minutes from time. Wells broke quickly from his own half and then showed brilliant skill to beat Bamba before rolling a pass to Karim Matmour, who could not miss from a yard out.

Bunn had a late chance to make it Huddersfield’s first five goal haul at Elland Road but saw his effort saved by Silvestri, who then did the same from a James Husband shot.
