Leeds United 1 Leicester City 2: Hot Somma on target again but Howard is spot-on for Leicester

MAN of the moment Davide Somma continued his goal-scoring exploits in his first start for Leeds United last night but Richie Wellens and Steve Howard's late penalty sent Championship rivals Leicester City through to the third round.

Somma, who left the bench to score twice on his Championship debut against Millwall on Saturday, pleaded with manager Simon Grayson to give him a Carling Cup start against the Foxes and the South African-born striker repaid his manager's faith with a classic glancing header to open the scoring in the 32nd minute.

Max Gradel, recalled to the side after serving a four-match ban, was eager to atone for his dismissal in the final game of last season and it was his right- wing cross which enabled Somma to pounce from the edge of the six-yard box.

Goalkeeper Shane Higgs responded to his call-up in place of Kasper Schmeichel with reassuring saves from French striker Danny N'Guessan and Steve Howard, but Gradel was in hungry mood, he and Bradley Johnson roasting Conrad Logan's hands with powerful first-half shots.

Leicester substitute Andy King made a goalline clearance from Becchio immediately after the break but the Foxes were a more potent force in the second half and they deservedly equalised in the 65th minute when Wellens's close-in shot punished some casual defending from Bradley Johnson.

Then, with the threat of extra time looming, Wellens's long free-kick was harshly adjudged to have been handled deliberately by defender Neill Collins, with no-one near the defender.

Former Derby County and Luton Town striker Howard then stepped up and drove the resultant penalty into the bottom left corner.
