The 25-year-old – the leading scorer in Sweden’s top division this season – travelled to England over the weekend after United reached an agreement with his club Kalmar.

Antonsson, who previously worked with new United assistant Pep Clotet at Halmstads, has completed a medical and finalised personal terms.

Aston Villa were also linked with the forward, who hit 10 goals in 12 games for Kalmar.

But he is now expected to become Garry Monk’s maiden capture since taking over as head coach.

George Moncur has handed Barnsley a timely boost by agreeing terms regarding a move to Oakwell.

The 22-year-old will leave Colchester United for a six-figure fee believed to be around £500,000 and sign for the Championship newcomers, with the U’s having earlier agreed a fee with both the Reds and Peterborough United.

Highly-rated Moncur, who hit 14 goals for Colchester last term, has finalised personal terms with Barnsley and will link up with them in time for pre-season.

Charlton Athletic had also been linked with the ex-West Ham junior, son of former Hammers and Swindon midfielder John, earlier this summer, only to pull out of the race.

Earlier this week, the Reds – who saw chief executive Ben Mansford leave for Yorkshire rivals Leeds on Monday – agreed terms with Aidy White regarding a new 12-month deal.
