Leeds United manager Steve Evans expects to learn of Elland Road future soon

Head coach Evans has taken United from flirting with relegation into the Championship’s top half but has still yet to be offered a long term contract by the club’s Italian owner.

The Scot’s current deal expires at the end of June - but Saturday’s hosting of Charlton Athletic marks United’s penultimate game of the season and Evans knows make your mind up time is near.

And Evans again insisted that he had absolutely no desire to seek employment elsewhere - despite United keeping the Glaswegian in limbo at a time when other clubs are reported to want the 53-year-old as head coach.

When asked about his future at Thursday afternoon’s Thorp Arch press conference, Evans said: “I am not aware of any changes - you guys can probably tell me more than I can tell you.

“But it’s obviously very close now to the president making his decision.

“I have come here in full knowledge that this day would come and the day is becoming much closer.

“So I just have to offer that respect and let him make the decision.

“I want to stay and I have made it clear, I don’t want to be anywhere else.

“I love this football club and respect it and everything that goes with it.

“I love representing it and I have said many times that by adding a few bits of quality to help in the dressing room, that we can have a real good season next season.

“But I’ll worry about my situation when we have that chat.”

Evans confirmed that he and Cellino had been in dialogue this week, but insisted that once again his future was not discussed.

The head coach revealed: “I have had dialogue with him about the team and about Hull City and the performance and how we are going to go forward to Charlton and what I am thinking of doing with he team and what I am not and that was all very positive.

“But the one thing I know about with Mr Cellino is that when he is ready to talk to me, he won’t by shy in coming to tell me. He will be talking to me, good or bad.”

The continued uncertainty means that Saturday’s clash with Charlton could be the Glaswegian’s last home game in charge.

Evans pondered: “My heart wants so much to be here and my head doesn’t know what to make of it because I am waiting on the answer.

“There will be lots of our supporters over the years who have been for interviews and different things and they get down to what the decision is going to be and I am no different.

“I can be excited and nervous at the same time but I have to keep my focus purely on Charlton. I have done that for a number of weeks now and it seems to have worked and when I woke up this morning and I was speaking to family that was my only focus, let’s have a good performance against Charlton.”

Asked if he would leave with any regrets should Cellino give the Glaswegian the boot - or if he would have done anything different, Evans smiled: “I might have made a couple of different substitutions a couple of times, especially the Huddersfield game! Nobody beats themselves up more than me and if you are close to me you do that.

“We always make different decisions when you don’t win a match because that’s what you are challenged to do.

“But when I got the job I said I would try and do it with some real energy and some real passion and some real integrity and I think I have carried that out.”
