Leeds United: Rising prospect hailed by Evans and Redfearn

The club’s Under-21 captain gave a polished display at right-back, largely negating the threat of Joe Newell, who scored the winner for the Millers in the recent league game between the sides.

Coyle’s performance drew praise from Leeds head coach Steve Evans and Millers chief Neil Redfearn, who brought him through the academy system while at Elland Road.

Evans said: “I’m so proud of him. I saw him play for 10 minutes when he first came in and thought ‘he’ll do for me.’ He started a little bit nervously and in the first 10 15 minutes I had to give him a few little reminders verbally but like Taylor, Mowatt, Cook and Byram, the youngsters take the infortmation and Lewie proved he could do that. I was really, really pleased with him in the second half. I thought he stepped up and became the cultured full-back we hope he would become.

“It’s very easy to say he’s played well so he stays in but Scott Wootton (whom Doyle replaced) was doing very well so there’s options there.”

Redfearn, whose tactics were partially designed to halt the marauding runs of another of his products, left-back Charlie Taylor, was equally generous in defeat.

He said of the 20-year-old brother of former IBF international lightweight boxing champion Tommy: “It was great to see another of mine getting in! When I say one of mine, they are; because I was there six years, and that’s six years worth of players. The kid’s doing great. If I’d have been here, he’d have had his chance this year, along with others probably. So it’s fantastic to see him come in, I thought he looked assured, I thought he played well and obviously that’s coming from the opposition manager, so good luck to him.”
