Buckley or not, we’ll have a new winger by next week: Leeds boss Rosler

Uwe Rosler said he was confident Leeds United would “get the job done” and sign a new winger as he sidestepped speculation about Sunderland’s Will Buckley.

United’s head coach admitted his hunt for a wide player would run beyond tomorrow’s friendly at home to Everton but said the search was in hand with seven days to go before the start of the Championship season.

Leeds have been looking a winger throughout the summer and are currently working on a small list of targets, including 25-year-old Buckley.

The former Brighton player - signed for £2.5million by Sunderland 12 months ago - is surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light and will be allowed to leave for around £1.5m before the end of the transfer window.

Numerous clubs including Leeds have expressed an interest in taking Buckley on a long-term loan but Sunderland are holding out for a permanent deal as they attempt to cut their losses.

Their valuation and Buckley’s current wage - thought to be in excess of £20,000 a week - could turn United’s attention elsewhere but Rosler said he was optimistic of finding a suitable answer to the problem on the left side of his three-man attack.

Rosler said: “We’re always working. I’m calm because I see the work that (Massimo) Cellino, Martyn Glover and Adam Pearson are putting in.

“That’s why I’m quite relaxed. I think we’ll get that job sorted.”

Asked about Buckley, Rosler said: “It’s very important that I don’t like to talk about players who are not Leeds United players. He’s not on a contract with us. That’s respectful of the player and the club.”

Pressed on whether Buckley might fit the bill at Elland Road, Rosler said: “As far as I know Will is a winger and we’re looking for a winger, yes.”

Leeds made an approach for Catania’s Raphael Martinho earlier this month but chose not to pursue their interest after holding talks with the Brazilian.
