Burnley enter race for listed Leeds United star Adam Clayton

LEEDS midfielder Adam Clayton could cross the Pennines after failing to agree an extension to his contract at Elland Road.

Burnley are reported to be poised to make an offer for Clayton, who has already been placed on Leeds manager Neil Warnock’s transfer list.

The 23-year-old’s departure would raise transfer funds for Warnock who is working to tie up further signings after making Jason Pearce his first summer recruit a fortnight ago.

United had held talks with Clayton’s representatives about a new contract but he was unexpectedly transfer-listed on the day Warnock announced his retained list.

He had played regularly under both Warnock and predecessor Simon Grayson this season.

Warnock said: “I have to look at it and say I’ll be signing a player for £400,000 or £500,000 and I don’t feel Adam’s worth more than the player I’ll be signing.

“With what I’m looking for, I’ve got to generate something to get me what I want. That’s how I looked at it and I’m trying to be a realist.”

Other sides are expected to compete for Clayton’s signature. Warnock said: “I’m sure there’ll be a number of clubs after Adam because he’s done well this season in a lot of games.”
