Butterfield to miss rest of Barnsley campaign

BARNSLEY midfield player Jacob Butterfield has been ruled out for the rest of the season by a knee injury suffered against Leeds United on New Year’s Eve.

The news is a major blow for the Tykes and also puts paid to the 21-year-old making a move away from Oakwell this month.

Barnsley manager Keith Hill was far from happy with the challenge by Leeds midfielder Michael Brown which led to his captain’s injury.

Scans have confirmed torn anterior cruciate ligaments and Butterfield will undergo surgery on Friday.

Striker Danny Haynes, meanwhile, has been transferlisted by the Tykes after falling out of favour with Hill.

Haynes joined the club 12 months ago from Bristol City but has not started a game for over four months.

The forward has not even been on the bench for the last two games despite injuries reducing Barnsley to only 14 fit senior players.

Leeds United have completed the signing of Stoke City midfield player Danny Pugh for an undisclosed fee.

Pugh, 29, has signed a two-and- a-half-year deal at Elland Road after returning on loan four months ago.

He originally joined Leeds from Manchester United in 2004 but was sold to Preston North End for £250,000 two years later.

“Danny is a versatile player and is a good addition to the squad,” said United manager Simon Grayson.

“He can play a few positions, he has already shown people what he is about, and it’s good to have him on a permanent basis.”

Goalkeeper Alex McCarthy and striker Andy Keogh have returned to Reading and Wolves, respectively, at the end of their loan deals while goalkeeper Paul Rachubka has extended his loan deal with Tranmere Rovers until the end of the month.

Huddersfield Town striker Robbie Simpson is set to complete a permanent move to Oldham Athletic in the next 48 hours.

Simpson spent three months on loan with the Latics before signing an interim loan deal in order to play in Monday’s game against Chesterfield.

“I’m sure the move will be completed by Friday,” he said. “I have had to take a hit (financially) but there is no price to be happy.”

Bradford City defender Simon Ramsden will be sidelined for up to six weeks after suffering a broken toe against Shrewsbury Town last weekend.

The Bantams, meanwhile, have parted company with Hull City’s Jamie Devitt, Leicester City’s Liam Moore, Watford’s Michael Bryan and Falkirk’s Jack Compton at the end of loan deals.
