Deadline Day: What your club should expect from today

The early form guide suggests some significant business across our 11 Yorkshire clubs, some welcome, some not, with Hull City and Huddersfield Town fans anxiously awaiting the fates of players who could leave the club, while the likes of Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday are concerning themselves more with incoming activity.

Plenty is likely to be going on elsewhere, although it is worth reminding folk that the emergency loan window opens in a week’s time following the 6pm closure of the summer transfer window today.

Here’s a run-down, club by club, or what we can maybe expect. Or not. And it could change...

Barnsley: What we can expect.

Lee Johnson is keen on bringing a couple of players in to make his squad more ‘robust’. The Reds look light up top and have been keen to bolster their striking ranks for some time to supplement Sam Winnall and Conor Wilkinson. Names mentioned in the recent past include Swindon’s Michael Smith. Johnson has spoken about owner Patrick Cryne supporting him in the past when he was come knocking on the door and they have the perfect man to negiotiate deals in chief executive Ben Mansford, who has considering experience as a football agent before linking up with the Reds. Some talk also of turning some of the deals they have for loan players into permenant deals, so that could be one to watch.

On the outgoing front, has been some talk of Huddersfield interest in play-maker Conor Hourihane, so the Reds will be keen to him away from Town’s mits by 6pm.

Bradford: What we can expect.

For all intents and purposes, it looks likely to be quiet one at VP, following their recent signing of Andrew Cole’s lad Devante, who marked his debut with a dramatic winner from the sub’s bench in Saturday’s last-gasp win over Port Vale. Never say never regarding incoming business, but it looks unlikely. The future of left-back Alan Sheehan, told he can leave the club for pastures new, could be resolved and that looks the most likely piece of business, if any, today.

Doncaster: What we can expect.

Paul Dickov, beset by injuries, is keen to do some business, more likely incoming loans, to boost his squad, having signed Ipswich winger Cameron Stewart to add to his numbers late last week. The future of wantaway midfielder Richie Wellens is up in the air amid talk of interest from a club close to his home in the North-West, so don’t be surprised to see him head for pastures new. Paul Dickov has granted him permission to talk with the interested club, so that one is likely to get sorted.

Huddersfield Town: What we can expect.

Persistence is likely to win the day for Derby County, whose bid of £3.5m rising to £4m with add-ons is likely to win the day in their lengthy pursuit of Jacob Butterfield, last season’s player of the year. It will represent a sizeable profit on the player for Town, who boughr him from Middlesbrough for £750,000 12 months ago. James Vaughan heading his way west to Wigan Athletic is also a strong possibility, with Chris Powell also desperate to do some incoming business - likely to be shorn of three leading players from last season in Butterfield, Conor Coady and Alex Smithies.

Town are reportedly keen on Nottingham Forest winger/forward Jamie Paterson along with Bournemouth custodian Lee Camp. Someone to potentially mitigate the likely losses of Butterfield and Vaughan are also big ‘to do’ areas. Barnsley’s Conor Hourihane is a reported target, with Gillingham’s Bradley Dack linked - although Gills owner Paul Scally said he was going nowhere last night. Other names include Shrewsbury’s Ryan Woods and Liverpool youngster Ryan Kent.

Hull City: What we can expect.

Tigers fans are entitled to hide behind the settee today, waiting to see which of their key men depart by 6pm, with interest in a number of their established players from last season, including Ahmed Elmohamady, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Mo Diame. Nikica Jelavic to West Ham for up to £3m looks signed and sealed, with Leicester and QPR among others keen on Elmohamady.

Several key players have release clauses in their deals following relegation, including Dawson, Huddlestone and Diame - with the smart money being on their agents likely to be busy today.

On the incoming front, Hull have bid £1.1m for Legia Warsaw keeper, Slovakia international Dusan Kusiak.

Leeds United: What we can expect.

The impending completion of the deal to sign Dutch winger Jordan Botaka looks to be Leeds’ chief piece of work in their in-tray - and you can bet your bottom dollar that fans and staff would not welcome any late interest in the crown jewels - aka Sam Byram, Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt.

Congo international Botoka has been in Leeds since Sunday after United agreed a fee with Excelsior, with the deal now ‘good to go’ - with the winger having agreed a two-year deal with the option of a third.

Leeds also have interest in Wolves winger Rajiv Van La Parra - also wanted by other Championship rivals - while on the outgoing front, Nicky Ajose could finally move on with Swindon keen.

Middlesbrough: What we can expect

Big issue for Boro is unsettled winger Albert Adomah, who wants to move from Teesside after submitting a transfer request after falling out with Aitor Karanka. Boro likely to be pragmatic about Adomah’s situation, but don’t expect him to leave for peanuts. QPR, who Adomah supports, have been linked along with his former club Bristol City, but nothing has failed to materalise yet and Boro are unlikely to sell unless they get a decent offer.

To compensate for Adomah’s potential loss, Boro are eyeing a £1m move for Nacional’s Carlos de Pena with the Uruguayan reportedly getting a flight to England yesterday. Newcastle’s French winger Yoan Gouffran is another name linked.

Don’t be surprised if Boro pull a transfer rabbit out of the hat, that’s for sure.

Rotherham United: What we can expect

Steve Evans, mindful of his side’s disappointing start to the season which has seen them fail to win in five league games so far, is, unsurprisingly, pretty active in the market after admitting that some of his players just aren’t good enough at this level after a 3-1 weekend loss to Fulham.

The Millers have struggled for goals, with a forward a priority. Evans had made no bones about his liking for Sheffield Wednesday forward Stevie May, who he tried to sign before he went to Owls - who promptly gazumped their South Yorkshire neighbours - but his fee and wages remain a major stumbling block. The Owls’ slapping of a £2m price tag on May’s head would blown the Millers out of the water and probably several others linked including Preston.

Sheffield Wednesday: What we can expect

Lots of rumours and striker talk and a bit more besides - anything can happen. The Owls’ wishlist includes Matej Vydra, Gary Hooper and a few fair others, while departures are also likely to balance a top-heavy squad which has a surfeit of midfielders and a fair few forwards, with Carlos Carvalhal admitting there has been some interest in some players, with loan exits a possibility. The £2m price tag on May’s head looks extremely excessive, with the Scot having been linked with Preston, the Millers, Nottingham Forest and Hibernian.

Vydra looks a realistic target, with Watford keen to trim their cosmopolitian squad, mindful that eight homegrown players are needed to be included in their 25-man squads submitted to the Premier League after the close of transfer business.

But several other clubs are likely to be keen on Vydra, a proven Championship operator and Hooper too.

Sheffield United: What we can expect

Nigel Adkins may be seething at having to fit in setting up transfer business with a JPT game at Hartlepool today, but it won’t stop him attempting to get some deals over the line, with the Blades, as it stands, looking a bit light in central midfield.

The Blades have reportedly up to five targets, who they have all held talks with, suggesting it could be a busy day at S2.

York City: What we can expect

A quiet day in all likelihood is expected at Bootham Crescent, although in an ideal world, you sense Russ Wilcox would like to add to his striking pool, with the club hit by injury problems up top and summer signing Reece Thompson being the only one of their forwards to find the net so far this term. Remains to be seen.
