Did Cellino disincentivise Antenucci at Leeds?

The Italian striker has been in excellent goalscoring form since the start of the campaign, striking five times.

He finished last season as the club’s top scorer, with 10 goals in the Championship.

Antenucci’s contract was incentivised to reward him with an extra year, should he have scored 12 goals, and reports suggested owner Massimo Cellino wanted him not to be selected to avoid that outcome.

That means Antenucci’s deal is set to expire at the end of June, and he admitted in an interview with Calcio Mercato that he is unsure over his plans for the future.

When asked, he said: “I still don’t know. My contract expires next June, let’s see what happens. The most important thing right now is be at my best when I play for Leeds.”

Antenucci also revealed he does not really think about his individual goal tally, when asked about comparisons between himself and Sheffield Wednesday’s Fernando Forestieri.

He said: “No goal-related challenges for me, thanks. I don’t like them. I prefer my team to win to my scoring lots of goals.”

The 31-year-old admitted that, with Cellino seemingly on his way out of Elland Road, he is thinking about the club more than anything.

“Honestly, I hope for the best for Leeds, just like Cellino and the fans,” he said, when asked about the potential sale.
