Leeds have unearthed another gem

Whites head coach Uwe Rosler had expressed reservations about starting Kalvin Phillips in the aftermath of Thursday’s Capital One Cup loss at Doncaster Rovers, but he needn’t have worried. At just 19 years of age, the midfielder looked a natural in Sunday’s goalless draw at Reading, belying his years, and United now seemingly have a ‘fab five’ of homegrown youngsters in Phillips plus Lewis Cook, Charlie Taylor, Alex Mowatt and Sam Byram.

Kike is back in business and Boro might take some stopping

Middlesbrough are now as short as 3-1 favourites to win the Championship and with Kike back in the goals the Riversiders might be the real deal. Bolton were blown away 3-0 on Saturday as Kike hit a double to get himself off the mark in a bid to beat last year’s goal tally of 12. The former Murcia man has the potential to get even better at just 25 years of age and while Saturday’s brace was Kike’s first for ‘Boro’ it won’t be his last. Brighton sit top of the table with the division’s only 100 per cent record after two games but unbeaten Boro, already second on goal difference, are hot on their heels.

This is a big season for Sheffield United’s Che Adams

The Blades have hardened as favourites to win League One - and Saturday’s 2-0 victory at home to Chesterfield was thanks to rising star Che Adams who bagged his first two goals of the season. Adams burst on to the scene with a brace in last January’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham in the Capital One Cup but had to wait until May’s play-off semi-final to find the net again. But Adams has only just turned 19 years old and could be in for a big season in which his stock and profile might significantly rise.

Tuesday night is a big night at York City

Plenty of Minstermen fans wore worried faces after the season opener at Wycombe which resulted in a 3-0 loss. York hit back by ousting Bradford City from the Capital One Cup on penalties but Saturday’s 2-1 loss at home to Hartlepool leaves them pointless from their opening two games. City boss Russ Wilcox will be desperately hoping to pick up three points from Tuesday night’s hosting of Yeovil who are also seeking their first point.

Guiseley might stay up

Most people were predicting a long hard season for promoted Guiseley upon their first taste of the National League - the old Football Conference.

Yet three games into the season the Lions sit eighth - above the likes of Cheltenham Town, Macclesfield and Torquay. Manager Mark Bower said before the season that the side’s form at Nethermoor was key and that is absolutely true. Two wins from two at home have the Lions better placed than many thought they would be.
