The Brewers have been searching for a new boss to take the helm at the club since former manager Gary Rowett left to manage Birmingham City earlier this month.

Former Whites defender Mike Whitlow is currently in caretaker charge at the Pirelli Stadium.

Hasselbaink, 42, has previously managed Belgium outfit Royal Antwerp – taking them to seventh place in the Belgian League last season - and has previously spent a spell on the coaching spell at Championship outfit Nottingham Forest.

The Dutchman, who joined Leeds for £2m from Boavista in June 1997 and was sold to £12m to Atletico Madrid in August 1999, declared an interest in Leeds’ head coaching position in September ahead of the appointment of Darko Milanic.

He told TalkSport at the time: “Leeds United is a wonderful big club where I had two great years.

If they want to talk to me, of course I would talk.

I’ve got experience, I know I could take the club forward and I know I can take the club back to where they need to go.

“But what do Leeds United themselves want? That’s the most important question. How do they see things? At the moment there are so many things going on they need to sort out first, or maybe they have already.

“But if they want to talk to me, of course I would be interested. Who doesn’t want to manage Leeds United? It’s one of the 10 biggest jobs in the country.”
