FT Leeds United 1 Leicester City 2: Drastic changes needed, admits Warnock

Neil Warnock saw his Leeds United side crash to another Championship defeat as Harry Panayiotou snatched a late winner for Leicester City at Elland Road.

Michael Brown returned from suspension in the centre of midfield for Leeds in their final match of the season.

Tom Lees replaced the injured Leigh Bromby in the centre of defence and Danny Pugh and Paul Connolly were also brought in by manager Warnock.

Former Leeds duo goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and striker Jermaine Beckford were in the Leicester side.

Snodgrass, Ross McCormack and Luciano Becchio failed to take early chances before the visitors began to exert their own pressure.

Martyn Waghorn calmly put Leicester ahead in the 39th minute after Pugh had fluffed his clearance and had been robbed by the striker outside the area.

Darius Vassell replaced Beckford at the start of the second half.

Danny Webber replaced Zac Thompson and he soon grabbed an equaliser on 82 minutes.

Webber tapped home after Snodgrass had knocked the ball past Schmiechel following Forssell’s challenge for a chip into the area.

But Leeds were sunk in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Marshall’s shot was deflected in off substitute Harry Panayiotou.

It condemned Leeds to a club record 11th home defeat of the season and capped of a year that has seen them change manager and fail to build on last season’s seventh-placed finish.

Leeds boss Neil Warnock is aware of where they have gone wrong, though, and is determined to put it right over the summer.

“I think the record is justified, it shows how low we’ve come,” said the veteran coach, who replaced Simon Grayson in February.

“Instead of being a fortress, it’s been a weakness. It won’t happen again. This is the lowest ebb for Leeds to lose that many games.

“We couldn’t have tried anymore, but that’s how it goes.”

Warnock is to announce his retained list on Wednesday, with the number of departures expected to dwarf those staying.

Names such as Portsmouth’s Jason Pearce and the controversial El-Hadji Diouf are waiting in the wings to arrive in West Yorkshire.

“We’re having a drastic change to the squad. We need to get ready and get amongst them,” he added of his work ahead.

“I don’t have the time to blend them in. We need to be ready to go.”
