Full-time: Leeds United 1-0 Wolves

In a game that saw United dominate the first half and the visitors come much more into proceedings after the break, the Argentinian’s 17th minute effort proved the difference.

Against a team containing many of the players who appeared in the Premier League in old gold, Leeds produced a gutsy display that was capped by the sweeping move that led to Becchio stooping to conquer and heading past Carl Ikeme.

After being outfought in the opening 45 minutes, Wolves were much improved after the break with the introduction of Peszko at the interval bringing more vibrancy to their attacking efforts.

The substitute should have done a lot better on 53 minutes when played through on goal by an Aidy White slip but his cross was cleared by Jason Pearce.

Peszko also shot high and wide after cutting in from the right while Matt Jarvis wasted a great chance with four minutes on the clock.

For all the improved output from Wolves, however, Leeds still had the best chance of the second half when a delightful through ball from David Norris played Luke Varney.

The former Portsmouth midfielder was through on goal but a poor first touch allowed Carl Ikeme to rush from his line.

Neil Warnock said of his players: “They deserve a lot of credit.

“We have a few niggles around the place and when you looked at our players and theirs, we were half the size of them, so we’ve done well.

“You have to do what we did today. The Championship is a different league to the top level.

“The players loved the atmosphere and playing in front of a big crowd. That was something I didn’t think we had about us last year.”
