Grayson looking for the positives in Town’s form

But the 42-year-old is determined that by then the Terriers could be kicking off a campaign of Championship football.

Former Leeds manager Grayson will take charge of Town for the first time tomorrow when Exeter City are the visitors to the Galpharm Stadium.

It will bring to an end a whirlwind week for both Huddersfield and their new manager, who met chairman Dean Hoyle for the first time last Sunday night and then signed a three-and-a-half year contract 24 hours later.

Grayson said: “We have settled in well and everyone at the club has been very welcoming.

“Now we are just looking forward to the Exeter game. First and foremost, we want to win football matches, regardless of whether at home or away – though it would be special to start with a win at home. Secondly, we want to put on a good performance for the home fans so we make the Galpharm into a buoyant place to be for our fans. And somewhere the opposition teams find difficult.

“I look at our results and maybe there have been too many draws at home so we want to make it more positive.”

Town sit fourth in League One, two points behind Sheffield Wednesday in third and a further five behind Sheffield United in the second automatic promotion place.

Grayson added: “There isn’t a great deal to turn around, though there will be a few different ideas we will bring to matchday.

“But there isn’t a lot wrong. We have a good squad of players with enough quality to achieve the aim of promotion.

“It will be difficult to make too many changes from last week. One or two who have been out of the picture will see it as a new opportunity.”

Asked when he expected to stamp his own mark on the Town squad, Grayson replied: “Time will tell, all we can try and do is be positive in everything we do. We want to eke that little extra bit out of the players needed to get the results we need.

“It will probably be the start of next season before we really stamp our mark on it, as by then we’ll have had a pre-season under our belt and maybe a couple of my own players. Plus, it will be a time to see the true reflection of my coaching abilities. But, in the meantime, we have 16 games to try and do things differently.

“The players here are good players, all very hungry. If we can fine-tune them to get another two, five or 10 per cent out of them then that could be the difference between automatic promotion and the play-offs.”
