Leeds battling with Celtic to bring in Wolves striker Doyle

LEEDS UNITED are battling it out with Celtic to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers’ striker Kevin Doyle – expected to leave Molineux this summer.

United are understood to have held talks with the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland forward, who is also interesting the Scottish Premier League giants.

Doyle is well known to Whites manager Brian McDermott, who played an influential role in him joining Reading from League of Ireland side Cork City in 2005.

Following Wolves’ relegation to League One, Doyle is expected to move elsewhere with the Midlanders keen to get him off their wage bill.

While new Wolves manager Kenny Jackett wants to assess his playing squad and make no quick decisions after recently taking over as head coach at Molineux, Doyle’s big-money wages are set to hasten his departure later on this summer.

His current weekly wage packet of around £30,000 is unsustainable in League One with Wolves seeking to move him on with several other big-earners – although they may have to make compromises for that to happen.

Doyle has no relegation clause in his deal and is just under halfway through a four-year-contract he signed back in the autumn of 2011 when Wolves were in the Premier League.

United chief McDermott confirmed earlier this week that the club have submitted offers for four players and are poised to approach further targets. It’s not thought that Leeds have as yet tabled a formal bid for Doyle, contracted until June 2015 at Wolves.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has revealed that Doyle remains one of his summer targets, although he is understood not to be right at the top of his wish-list, which also includes Vitoria Guimaraes’ striker Amido Balde, who has been linked with a £2.5m move to Parkhead.

On Doyle, Lennon said: “We had an interest in Kevin in January to take him on loan, but whether we take a look at a permanent move, I don’t know. We haven’t pushed the button on any player, but we have a number of options in each position.”

Sheffield Wednesday defender Lewis Buxton believes the Hillsborough club can challenge for promotion to the Premier League next season.

The right-back, who has just signed a new two-year deal with the Owls and is their longest serving player along with Jermaine Johnson, is eager for a chance in the top flight after rejecting the chance to move away, with Nottingham Forest understood to to interested.

“My goal as a player is to get to the Premier League and that is Wednesday’s goal,” he said.

“There was a bit of interest from elsewhere but as soon as Wednesday said they were offering me a new deal, that was all I wanted. Depending on who we can bring in, hopefully we can challenge for the play-offs.”

Bradford City manager Phil Parkinson is prepared to be patient in his summer recruitment plans at Valley Parade.

“There are obviously going to be lots of names linked with us at this time of year,” he said.

“The key for us is that we utilise the budget available to us in the best possible way though.”
