Leeds hero Clayton ready for a feisty encounter

LEEDS UNITED midfielder Adam Clayton is expecting tonight’s derby to be every bit as feisty as Leeds United’s derby victory over Bradford City in the previous round.

The Elland Road club face their second all-Yorkshire tie when they make the trip to Doncaster Rovers.

Buoyed by last week’s 4-1 hammering of Hull City and Sunday’s thrilling 2-2 draw at promotion favourites West Ham, Simon Grayson’s side will head south in confident mood.

Clayton, whose 90th-minute strike rescued a point at Upton Park, is expecting a test every bit as tough as Bradford provided in the first round when only late goals by Ross McCormack and Ramon Nunez sealed a 3-2 victory.

“We want to win every game,” said the former Manchester City midfielder when asked how seriously tonight’s tie was being taken by Leeds.

“We have the best fans in the world and they want us to win every game and we will try and get the result.

“It was a derby in the last round (against Bradford) and that was a feisty affair. I would expect this will be the same. We can pass the ball as well as anyone and it has all the makings of a good game.”

Leeds will again be without Michael Brown due to the calf injury that kept the 34-year-old out of Sunday’s draw in the capital but, otherwise, Grayson has no fresh injury concerns.

That may not prevent there being changes with Ramon Nunez and Lloyd Sam pushing for starts, while Andy Keogh is allowed to play under the terms of his loan switch from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Should Leeds win at the Keepmoat Stadium, it will mean it has been a satisfying eight days for Grayson and his side after the disappointing start that brought back-to-back Championship defeats to Southampton and Middlesbrough.

Clayton added: “I think the Leeds fans should be excited about what is going to happen this season because we have a very strong group of players and we will be fine.

“Promotion is the aim, of course. We have got a couple of good results and, hopefully, we can push on now and get some more good results.

“We have only had one bad game, against Southampton. We were unfortunate against Middlesbrough because we went down to nine men and in the two other games we have performed very well.”

Clayton, who was sent out on loan to Peterborough and MK Dons last season after joining United from Manchester City, has been United’s top performer this season and admits the equaliser at West Ham was a sweet moment. He said: “It was brilliant. It was one of the highlights for me, diving into the fans at the end. I was buzzing.”
