Leeds linked to move for rising star Webster

The Sherburn-in-Elmet born centre-half is on the look-out for a new club after turning down a new contract at Huish Park, having been a regular for the Glovers in the past two seasons.

Webster was on the books at Elland Road as a youngster before spells with the likes of Harrogate Town, Whitby Town and York City ahead of a move back in the Football League with Doncaster Rovers.

Several clubs, including Leeds, have expressed interest in Webster, who is believed to have spoken with Millwall and one other club yesterday after his return from holiday.

The 6ft 4in defender is due to speak with several other clubs, including Rotherham United, next week with Ipswich Town another Championship side who are reportedly in the hunt.

But according to sources close to the player, a return north to where his football journey started at Leeds is something that would be a hugely attractive lure for him.

United, whose players are staff were due to be paid their monthly wage packets today, recently revived their interest in Peterborough United’s Tommy Rowe and have also been linked with former Arsenal and Tottenham trainee Andre Blackman.

Rowe is a free agent after rejecting fresh terms at London Road, with Wolves also keen on signing the left-sided player, who will resolve his future when he returns from holiday next month.

The uncertain picture at Elland Road should become clearer next week with United owner Massimo Cellino due to fly into the UK from the United States to meet manager Brian McDermott and the club’s players at Elland Road on Monday - and start planning for 2014-15 in earnest.

This came after the Italian wrote to the club’s coaching staff and playing squad earlier this month to tell them to be present at the meeting.

It will represent the first face-to-face conversation between Cellino and McDermott in over a month, with relations between the pair having grown increasingly strained in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Cellino’s sale of Cagliari to an unnamed American investment group led by Luca Silvestrone could be completed today with contracts set to be signed off after a deal was agreed in principle in Miami on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Italian sources, Cellino has sold all the club shares in his possession.

The main pending issue revolves around planning permission for the redevelopment of Cagliari’s Sant’Ella Stadium, where the club’s capacity was reduced to around 5,000 last season.

Ground redevelopment is central to the American group’s takeover, with Silvestrone due to speak with council officials regarding Sant’Ella today.
