Leeds must be wary of Latics, warns Eddie Gray

Neil Redfearn’s Leeds side will be looking to continue a decent start to 2015 and back up Wednesday night’s encouraging 2-1 defeat of promotion-chasing Ipswich Town at Elland Road.

However, Gray knows Leeds have actually fared better against the higher ranked teams in the Championship this term and is warning about the dangers of underestimating Malky Mackay’s hosts.

Wigan have not won at home since August and the Latics are 13 points behind 15th-placed Leeds but there was also a seven-point gap between United and Brighton when the Seagulls recorded a 2-0 victory last month.

Wigan also approach Saturday’s fixture on the back of consecutive away wins at Blackpool and Norwich City and are actually around 11-10 favourites to beat Leeds.

“You can’t say you are 100 per cent confident,” said Gray of United’s chances.

“I think if we play to our capabilities we will get a result but you look at the some of the results from last Saturday – Sheffield Wednesday beating Middlesbrough, Fulham beating Derby, comfortable victories for both sides.

“So we cannot go to Wigan and think ‘Wigan are down the bottom of the table, we’ll win this game.’

“We went down to Brighton when Brighton were in a bad position in the league and they beat us.

“We’ve got to make sure we go out and perform to the best of our ability.

“Wigan have got some decent players but generally they have been having a bad time.

“They have got to turn things around quickly or they will be doomed.

“When you look at the players they had at the start of the season they were among the favourites to come up. It’s a strange league.”
