Leeds rewarded with League Cup trip to Magpies

LEEDS United find themselves rewarded for Tuesday night’s 3-1 Capital One Cup win at Doncaster Rovers with a third round trip to Premier League Newcastle United.

The Ameobi brothers spared Newcastle’s blushes at Morecambe where they eventually won 2-0 – Shola coming off the bench to open the scoring with a deflected 84th-minute shot, and Sammy making sure of the Magpies’ progress in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The two other remaining Yorkshire clubs – Hull City and Huddersfield Town – will face off against each other at the KC Stadium.

Holders Swansea City kick off their defence at Birmingham City, while there are a number of all Premier League ties.

Aston Villa – 3-0 victors over Rotherham United at Villa Park on Wednesday night thanks to goals from Andreas Weimann, Christian Benteke and ex-Leeds midfielder Fabian Delph – host Tottenham. West Ham United face Cardiff City, while Arsenal travel to West Bromwich Albion.

The big talking point provided by the third round draw though, was Luis Suarez making his return from a 10-match ban for Liverpool in a mouthwatering clash with fierce rivals and Premier League champions Manchester United.

The 26-year-old’s future has been the subject of rife speculation this summer after he began agitating for a move from Anfield.

Should Suarez stay past next week’s transfer deadline, his first match back after biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic last season will be at Old Trafford against United.

The draw also produced a repeat of this year’s FA Cup final.

Wigan shocked Manchester City to triumph in May and will travel to the Etihad Stadium hoping to cause another surprise.

Jose Mourinho’s first taste of the competition he twice won in his previous spell as Chelsea boss will be at League One outfit Swindon.

Sunderland take on Peterborough and Southampton, who thumped Barnsley 5-1 at Oakwell on Tuesday night, welcome Bristol City.

Elsewhere, Tranmere Rovers travel to Stoke City while Leicester City play host to fierce East Midlands rivals Derby County.

Everton will travel to fellow Premier League side Fulham after coming through 2-1 in extra-time against Stevenage Borough.

Burnley will face Championship leaders Nottingham Forest, who also enjoyed a 2-1 win in extra-time, with Millwall losing out.
