Leeds United: Byram set to stay at Elland Road in the short-term

NEWCASTLE United’s hopes to sign top Leeds United player Sam Byram could soon be dashed.

The full-back turned winger is in the final year of his contract at Elland Road but is in no rush to leave.

The club are hoping to extend the 21-year-old’s contract but, in any case, Byram has indicated that he does not wish to move before the current transfer window closes.

Of course, if Byrsam runs down his contract it will strengthen his bargaining position to join another club next summer if not in the January transfer market.

Byram was watched again by Newcastle - by assistant manager Ian Cathro and head scout Graham Carr - on Saturday when he opened the Championship campaign on the right wing in the 1-1 home draw with Burnley.

Everton and Aston Villa have also followed Byram’s situation this summer, though no offer has been received for the academy product, who has already made over 100 appearances.

Leeds head coach Uwe Rosler has previously said: “He’s under contract, he has a manager who really believes in him and he has a chairman (Cellino) who really believes in him. He’s found his home.

“We’re not looking to sell him. We’re looking to build a future around our young players and he’s a big important part of my way of playing and of the idea of this club going forward.”
