Leeds United: Contract talks on the horizon for Smith

The YEP understands that Smith’s representative will discuss his dwindling deal with Leeds in the next few days amid continuing interest from Millwall in the striker.

Smith, 25, is into the last year of his contract at Elland Road and has yet to be offered an extension.

The forward has already attracted one offer from Millwall - an offer which Leeds rejected - but the South London club are monitoring his situation and could submit an increased bid if United fail to improve his deal.

Smith played as a substitute in Saturday’s Championship game at The Den, a game which Leeds lost 2-0, and Millwall manager Ian Holloway claimed afterwards that the forward’s introduction in the second half had helped to swing the balance of the game in United’s favour.

But Holloway refused to be drawn on the possibility of an improved bid for Smith, saying: “I don’t discuss other teams’ players. He’s a Leeds United player.”

Smith scored 13 goals for United last season - his first campaign at Elland Road and his first in the Championship - but he revealed last week that Leeds were still to open contract negotiations with him, saying: “I’m not aware of any serious movement on that front.

“That’s down to the owner (Massimo Cellino) to make that happen and it’s his opinion on me that counts.”

But Smith added: “I’m a Leeds player and that goes until I’m told differently. I’d be very sad if I was told differently.

“I’m very aware of how special it is to wear the badge and I’ll never take my position for granted. I’ll never disrespect the club.

“Clubs never show an interest in you when you’re playing badly so any interest is flattering to a degree but I’m not sure what was happening with Millwall because I wasn’t really kept informed.

“I’ve just been going about my business and I’m perfectly happy to do that.”
