The win keeps Sean O’Driscoll’s side on course for reaching this summer’s Under-19s finals in Greece – with Cook eager to follow last year’s summer highs with the Under-17s with another glorious sojourn with England.

Manchester City’s Ashley Smith-Brown netted the only goal of the game in Bayeux for the Under-19s, who tackle France in a winners-takes-all encounter on Tuesday.

The success followed the 3-2 triumph over Denmark on Thursday.

France beat Denmark 2-0 on Saturday to lead the way on goal difference, meaning that O’Driscoll’s Young Lions must beat them in Saint-Lo to take the group’s only qualification spot.

After the game Cook tweeted: “Buzzing with a the win against Azerbaijan, lads were class.”
