Leeds United - owners of the worst home record in the Championship

They are no longer the side with the worst home record in the second tier, an honour that now belongs to Leeds United.

The Whites have won only once at home all season, drawn three times and lost on five occasions, gathering a total of six points at Elland Road.

Worryingly for Leeds, Hull City, who visit on Saturday, have the third best away record this term in the Championship.

Below, we look back on the nine games that have put Leeds in this inauspicious position:

Leeds 1-1 Burnley

Optimism surrounded Elland Road on the opening day of the season, boosted by the signing of Stuart Dallas in the week preceding the beginning of the campaign. Leeds were probably the better side over the course of the 90 minutes, and were duly rewarded when substitute Mirco Antenucci put them ahead in the 83rd minute. However, they were pegged back only three minutes later by former Leeds loanee Sam Vokes’ header.

Leeds 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday

A wonder goal by Marco Matias put Sheffield Wednesday into a first-half lead, stunning the Whites after a fairly even contest. The introduction of Alex Mowatt and Luke Murphy in the second-half made a difference for Leeds. Stuart Dallas was switched over to the right-hand side, and played a beautiful low cross into the area for Chris Wood to turn home and secure the draw.

Leeds 1-1 Brentford

This time it was Mirco Antenucci’s turn to rescue a point after Marco Djuricin put Brentford into the lead in the first-half. Antenucci, introduced from the bench, dispossessed Brentford substitute Ryan Woods with far too much ease before charging at the goal and rifling home with his left foot. It was a fifth draw out of six games for Leeds, the continuation of an unbeaten start to the campaign in the league.

Leeds 0-1 Ipswich

A first defeat of the season in the league for the Whites. They were condemned to the loss by a first-half header from Tommy Smith, the first time they had lost to Ipswich at Elland Road since 2005. Marco Silvestri was to blame for the loss, having come to punch a corner away but missing the ball entirely in the process. Lewis Cook could have equalised, but fired just wide twice.

Leeds 0-2 Birmingham

A game that confirmed Leeds’ home record was becoming an issue. Visitors Birmingham went ahead after Clayton Donaldson teed up Demarai Gray, who hit home. Stuart Dallas could have equalised, his effort saved by Tomasz Kuszczak. Jacques Maghoma sealed the victory for the Blues with an injury time strike as Leeds pressed for a goal to draw themselves level.

Leeds 1-2 Brighton

A wholly dispiriting display by Leeds, and Uwe Rosler’s last game in charge of the Elland Road club. Solly March put the Seagulls ahead in the 14th minute, but Leeds levelled soon after, Liam Cooper glancing a header into the back of the net after a free-kick. However, Bobby Zamora’s introduction and first goal for Brighton for 4,549 days proved the difference, dealing Leeds another loss.

Leeds 0-2 Blackburn Rovers

Arguably one of the worst opening six minutes ever witnessed at Elland Road, Leeds went behind to a goal from Craig Conway after only 17 seconds. The tie was essentially wrapped up only five minutes later, Jordan Rhodes turning in the area before firing low past Marco Silvestri. Leeds struggled to create chances throughout the tie, and never looked like scoring one, never mind bringing the tie level. It was Steve Evans’s first home game as Leeds head coach.

Leeds 1-0 Cardiff City

An Alex Mowatt wonder-strike settled a hard fought contest between Leeds and Cardiff City. Mowatt’s strike was the first goal Leeds had scored from open play since September 19. Chris Wood could have even doubled the Whites’ advantage as the game rolled on, but he missed from close range with the goal gaping. Steve Evans admitted the result made him “very proud”.

Leeds 0-1 Rotherham

The return of Neil Redfearn may have eventually devolved into a fight over parking places, but Leeds struggled throughout the match. Joe Newell put Rotherham into the lead in the 54th minute. The Millers then defended staunchly to secure a first win for Redfearn. The tension inside Elland Road was palpable, culminating in a double sending off for Leon Best and Gaetano Berardi.
