Leeds United still in race for Kyle Lafferty but joined by Red Star Belgrade

Red Star Belgrade are poised to challenge Leeds United for Kyle Lafferty’s signature in the January transfer window.

Leeds failed to sign Lafferty prior to the close of the emergency loan window, although the Yorkshire Post understands that the Whites retain an interest in bringing the Northern Ireland international to Elland Road when the winter window opens.

The Norwich City striker is thought to be keen on a switch to West Yorkshire. Part of the appeal includes teaming up with international colleague Stuart Dallas, with the two having worked well in tandem as Lafferty, 28, struck seven goals in Euro 2016 qualification.

However, Red Star have identified Lafferty as a potential difference maker as they look to reach the Champions League group stages next season.

Like Leeds over a decade ago, the Serbian club are in millions of pounds of debt and need a place in the group stages of Europe’s elite club competition to get the club back on a stable financial footing.

Red Star are not Leeds’ only potential competition for Lafferty’s signature. Last week, the Italian press reported that Lafferty’s former club Palermo had made contact with Norwich over a switch.
