Leeds added seven players to their squad before the start of the Championship season, investing £3m in striker Chris Wood and £1.3m in winger Stuart Dallas, but FIFA’s September 1 deadline is creeping closer and Rosler warned that he was coping with a squad which was “thin in areas”.

The 46-year-old head coach is managing his players through a glut of four fixtures in 10 days and he promised further changes at Ashton Gate after shuffling his squad for Thursday’s League Cup defeat at Doncaster Rovers and Sunday’s 0-0 draw away to Reading.

Leeds, who have allowed strikers Billy Sharp and Steve Morison to leave Elland Road in the past month, are likely to commit to further deals before the window shuts and look set to prioritise the addition of another forward as alternative cover for Wood, Dallas and right-winger Sam Byram.

A recent bid of around £1.5m for NEC Nijmegen’s Belgian winger Anthony Limbombe was rejected and Leeds are not believed to have returned to the Dutch club with an improved offer.

Rosler warned against rushing into deals which “we’ll regret later on” but said: “A club like Leeds United should always look to improve the squad. When you see now with (Lewis) Cook having a three-match ban and two players coming back from surgery (Luke Murphy and Tommaso Bianchi) we’re already thin in some areas.

“At the moment, and I hope this stays the same, we don’t have many injuries in other departments. We have to make sure we have enough quality and depth but we don’t need to dive in just to drive on a safety policy here. That’s not what we want.

“We also have the loan window which we can tap into. At the moment it’s going fine but we’re always on the look-out to improve our squad.

“There are still two weeks until the transfer window closes so I’d be pretty relaxed about the situation. Yes, we have some key players they can’t get injured but that’s football. We have to see how the situation develops.”

Asked if his existing squad was big enough to stand up to a full season in the Championship, Rosler said: “You’re always looking to improve certain areas but we’re not diving into something we’ll regret later on. I think that’s the main thing.

“With the financial situation at this club just now, we cannot afford to make any mistakes - simple as that. We have to be cautious but we also have to see the size of the squad, especially in certain areas of the field.”
