Leeds will make Premiership play-offs - McCormack

ROSS McCormack claimed Leeds United were positioning themselves for an attack on the Championship’s top six after seeing off Yeovil Town with his seventh and eighth goals of the season.

McCormack struck twice in the second half to seal a 2-0 win at Elland Road and called on Leeds to improve their chances of earning a play-off position by taking a grip on their form away from home.

United climbed to eighth in the table on Saturday as their results in Leeds continued to offset a streak of four straight away defeats.

McCormack found the net on 48 and 68 minutes to move himself to within two goals of 10 for the season but his focus remained on the promotion fight with United’s division beginning to take shape.

“It’s still early doors and we’d like to be higher but we’re within touching distance,” the Scotland international said.

“Another couple of wins and we could make the top six but it’s March or April when you need to be there.

“We’ve been a bit ‘one step forward, one step back’ this season. We win at home and then lose away.

“It’s frustrating. But if we can win most of our home games and sort ourselves out away from home then we will be close.”

United were led out for Saturday’s match by Norman Hunter, the legendary defender who made more than 700 appearances for Leeds and turned 70 last week.

The club marked his birthday with a hard-fought, but thoroughly deserved victory over Yeovil and McCormack admitted that the current squad at Elland Road were under pressure to bring success to a club who grew accustomed to trophies and titles during Hunter’s time as a player.

McCormack said: “Norman’s an important figure.

“These guys deserve to be remembered but Leeds are in the Championship and it’s up to us to try and get them back to where everyone thinks the club deserve to be.

“The club will only deserve to be (in the Premier League) if we get them there.”
