McCarthy agrees to stay with United

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has agreed to extend his loan stay at Elland Road for a further month.

The England Under-21 international was signed six games ago after manager Simon Grayson lost patience with Paul Rachubka who was deputising for the injured Andy Lonergan.

He will not be allowed to play in this weekend’s game against his parent club Reading but Lonergan is fit again and back in contention.

“I’d like to thank Brian McDermott at Reading for allowing Alex to stay on here for another month.” said Grayson. “He has done very well for us in the time he has been here. He’s a fantastic young goalkeeper and we’re grateful to Reading for allowing him to stay on. We have a number of games coming up and by keeping Alex it enables us to have plenty of options in that area.”
