New maturity gives Hall fresh start at Leeds

NEIL WARNOCK believes Leeds United’s new signing Ryan Hall is now mature enough to make a mark in the Championship, writes Richard Sutcliffe.

The 24-year-old has moved to Elland Road on loan from Southend United and will sign a two-and-a-half year deal to make the move permanent in January.

Hall played under Warnock at Crystal Palace but the pair fell out and the wideman moved into non-League football with Bromley before resurrecting his career with Southend in 2010.

Last season, he scored 14 goals for the League Two club and also boasted the highest number of assists in the Football League.

However, Hall fell out with Southend earlier this season after a proposed move to Blackpool fell through.

Warnock said: “He seems a different lad. The problem with a club like Palace is you have to manage the club to realise what these lads have to put up with.

“It is not an easy life. A lot of mates are unemployed and that brings temptations. When you have a footballer as a mate, you cling on to them and sometimes that drags you into situations you shouldn’t. That was Ryan’s situation.

“I couldn’t keep giving him another chance. It seemed to be every month at Palace. Hopefully, he will respond to a new start.

“The type of lads we have here means he has an opportunity. It is up to him to take it. He is away from London and that is vital as he can concentrate on football.

“He also has a partner. With a bit of luck, he can get himself into the team regularly.”

Hall, who could be on the bench tonight at Hillsborough, is delighted to be reunited with Warnock and back in the Championship.

He said: “I would say I have changed already. I just wanted the chance to show everyone that this is me.

“I have been given a second opportunity by the gaffer here and I want to grab it with both hands. He was a great manager (at Palace) but I got myself in a bit of trouble. He had to let go of me.

“At the time he said to me ‘get your head down and do what you do best.’ Now he’s come back for me, I want to show what I can do.

“The manager’s just told me to make sure I keep myself clean and do everything he knows I can do. I’m getting on now and it’s time I settled down.”
