Ngoyi readied for Leeds appearance

January signing Granddi Ngoyi has been pencilled in for an appearance with Leeds United’s Under-21s on Friday with the Frenchman bidding to prove his fitness and play a part in the club’s Championship run-in.

Ngoyi has been nursing a thigh injury throughout his time at Elland Road but the on-loan Palermo midfielder resumed full training on Monday and is in line to feature in a development-squad match at Nottingham Forest later this week.

The 26-year-old moved to Leeds with an underlying problem and was signed on a half-season deal without undergoing a medical. He aggravated it during his first week of training.

Injuries have eaten into head coach Neil Redfearn’s pool of central midfielders recently, with Italian Tommaso Bianchi undergoing knee surgery, but Ngoyi’s comeback is set to put him in contention for the last month-and-a-half of the Championship season.

Redfearn said: “If we can get a full week of him training and there’s no comeback then he can maybe get half-an-hour on Friday. It would be nice to see him in action.”

Ngoyi, a former Paris Saint-Germain player, was signed by Leeds during the same negotiations which brought centre-back Sol Bamba to Elland Road from Palermo.

Bamba spoke highly of him after the pair’s arrival, saying: “He’s a very good player. Physically and technically he can help the team.”
