Today there were reports that Leeds’s new owner, the Dubai-based private equity group GFH Capital has moved to bring in a new man.

They are said to have sounded out Adkins, who left Southampton despite taking the club into the Premier League.

He has already turned down a job with Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

But he is said to relish the prospect of running a big-name club like Leeds, either in the close season or sooner if Warnock is sacked.

GFH Capital has itself been the subject of a new proposed takeover.
