No way, Jose! David Moyes linked to top job at Leeds

LEEDS United head coach Steve Evans has shrugged off suggestions that David Moyes could take his job, declaring: “all I can do is try and win football matches.”

The relaxed Glaswegian also joked that at least under fire Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was not being linked with Leeds, even if the city’s female audience might think otherwise.

Evans is quickly winning over the Whites fan-base with back to back wins against Cardiff and Huddersfield Town taking Leeds six points clear of the Championship dropzone and nine points off the play-offs.

Yet amidst the circumstances of chairman Massimo Cellino’s proposed sale of the club, the Liverpool Echo surprisingly reported on Wednesday evening that potential investor Steve Parkin had highlighted Moyes as his preferred choice of head coach.

There is no concrete evidence to support those claims though former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes was sacked by Real Sociedad this week with United 11-10 favourites to be his next club with Sky Bet.

And Evans talked openly about the speculation in his Thursday morning press conference, admitting he hoped continuing to win football matches would keep him in his position and honest enough to say he would leave an emotional man should he be removed from his position.

Evans quipped: “I was pleased to see David linked with it and not Jose Mourinho though I think all the ladies in Leeds would like Jose Mourinho to be the coach.

“I’ve said I’m not going to get involved in any off the field matters.

“I see big Moyesy has been linked with it and I know David extremely well, I grew up playing with David and we are distant friends if I can use that phrase appropriately.

“But if Leeds United Football Club ever thought that someone else was the man for the role and it’s not me then I’ll drive out of Thorp Arch and I’ll cry on the way out but I’m a big man.

“If someone is better for the role than me and that’s what the people above me think then we have to get on with it.

“All I can do is try and win football matches for this club and if you are winning football matches on a regular basis for this football club you will be the first to do it in a long time.”
