Power Rankings: Hull City forge ahead but Leeds United and Doncaster close the gap

Hull City have become something of a permanent fixture at the top of The Yorkshire Post Power Rankings over the last few weeks.

However, there have been runs put together elsewhere in Yorkshire, not least at Leeds United, where a home hoodoo has given way to two wins on the bounce, which could affect their ranking.

Sides further down the pyramid have also improved under new managers, and have deservedly risen.

It does not get much better for Hull, who are top of the Championship after a run of six wins on the bounce.

Their victory against Middlesbrough on Saturday also helped outline their credentials as potential champions of the second tier.

To beat a promotion rival is one thing, but to beat them 3-0 is another, and the Tigers have reason to believe this can be a sustained joust at the crown.

Key players are hitting form, and with Premier League-standard options available to Steve Bruce, there’s no reason to think this run will end any time soon. It will be interesting to see how they sustain it after the international break.

2: Leeds United (up three)

It’s not as though Leeds are no longer in chaos, but they have stabilised on the pitch under Steve Evans.

Looking at the record since his appointment, one loss in five reads quite nicely.

The victory against Huddersfield Town on Saturday also helps them shoot up the rankings, dominating a local rival as they did to win 3-0.

There is now talk of a play-off push. It seems unlikely, given that the Whites are nine points off the top six, but is not an insurmountable odd for Evans and his team to climb.

3) Doncaster Rovers (up four)

Doncaster Rovers look like they may finally be putting some form together under new manager Darren Ferguson.

A victory against Colchester last week has been followed up by a victory against Stalybridge Celtic in the FA Cup first round.

Yes, Celtic are not exactly the toughest opposition Rovers will face, but a 2-0 win against them kept the momentum going.

That explains their rise in the rankings, as one of few Yorkshire sides who look like they are improving as time goes on.

They are now undefeated in their last six, but manager Phil Parkinson will not have been happy with the Bantams’ 0-0 draw against Aldershot Town on Saturday.

It should have been a relatively easy way to pass into the second round, a visit to a side in the fifth tier.

However, Bradford struggled, unable to score past their National League opposition.

City have been more defensively solid in recent weeks, but they need to add more attacking force if they want to do something this season.

5) Middlesbrough (down three)

Middlesbrough’s loss against Hull on Saturday would not have gone down well with Aitor Karanka, but there is no reason to feel too disheartened.

Yes, they conceded three, and yes, Hull dominated, but Boro were away from home and facing one of the strongest squads in the division.

They are only four points away from the automatic promotion places, so there’s no real need to panic.

However, they need to look to Hull, and themselves earlier this season, for inspiration, and put together a winning run to properly involve themselves with City and Brighton at the top.

6) Sheffield Wednesday (down three)

Call it the curse of the writer, but last week we highlighted the fact that Sheffield Wednesday were undefeated in the league for nine games.

A week later, they’re facing up to a defeat against Charlton at the weekend, just before the international break.

That 3-1 loss could be damaging, especially with no game coming up to recapture their momentum, but there are still reasons to be positive for a side that were tipped for relegation.

They are ninth in the Championship and only four points away from sixth. They could still turn this into a sensational season.

7) Barnsley (up six)

A victory for Lee Johnson’s Barnsley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy helps them move up the rankings this week.

They beat York City 2-1, coming from behind to ensure progress into the next stage of the competition.

The push up the rankings comes with a caveat - Barnsley really do need to start winning games in the league or relegation seems a certainty.

But they will be boosted by last night’s result, not least Adam Hammill’s man-of-the-match display after returning to Oakwell last week.

8) Guiseley (down two)

Guiseley followed up their win against Welling United with another victory at Nethermoor on the weekend.

That helped, with victories having been at a premium in recent weeks.

However, they collapsed on Tuesday night to a 5-0 loss against Cheltenham, which speaks for their struggles.

Two wins does mean they are up to 15th though, pulling away from a relegation battle that threatened to involve them.

9) Sheffield United (-)

Two cup games is probably not what Nigel Adkins would have wanted after a run of games that has seen them struggle to pick up wins in the league.

However, they did their job against Worcester City on Saturday, beating the non-league side 3-0 to advance to the second round of the FA Cup.

They then drew against Fleetwood in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, ultimately losing a penalty shoot out 4-1.

With Southend United visiting on Saturday, Adkins will be hoping for a win to rebuild the club’s momentum and automatic promotion push.

10) Huddersfield Town (down two)

Sacking a manager in the week building up to an important local derby would never seem like a particularly good idea.

It did not work out for Town, who lost 3-0 against their hated rivals Leeds on Saturday.

They now have former Borussia Dortmund II manager David Wagner in charge, and it will be interesting to see what changes he can implement over the international break.

The Terriers are only two points above the relegation zone, so will have to hope the appointment works out.

11) FC Halifax Town (down one)

It may be two losses in a row now for Town, but there’s a huge caveat surrounding Saturday’s 4-0 defeat.

They were facing league opposition Wycombe Wanderers at The Shay, and it would have been a surprise boost if they’d managed a victory.

The focus now has to be on the visit of Braintree Town this weekend. The Shaymen are rooted to the bottom of the National League and need wins to turn that around soon.

12) Rotherham United (down one)

LDLLLL

It’s not been good for Neil Redfearn at Rotherham, where he is still waiting for a first win.

Saturday’s 5-2 defeat against Ipswich Town was a particularly poor display, and there have to be questions over whether his squad are anywhere near up to the task of staying in the Championship.

The worst display on the day came from one of their more experienced players, Paul Green, which shows how weak their options are.

However, they will have been boosted slightly by loan signing Brandon Barker’s brilliant strike. The on-loan Manchester City winger looks like a talent who could have an impact.

13) York City (down one)

LDLLLL

The appointment of Jackie McNamara has not brought the immediate improvement that York City would have hoped for.

They went ahead against Barnsley in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night, but could not see it out, ultimately losing 2-1.

They also lost against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup at the weekend, defeated 3-2 by their League Two rivals.

With Plymouth set to visit at the weekend, the Minstermen could do with a win, but the side in 22nd could struggle against the top side in the fourth tier.
