Is Russell Crowe planning to bid for Leeds United?

HE KNOWS all about making a dramatic impact in front of the film cameras, and now actor Russell Crowe has proved he knows a thing or two about causing a stir on social media - by dropping a tantalising hint on Twitter that he might consider buying Leeds United.

Crowe, 50 and a long-term United fan, was urged to plough some of his fortune into the club in a light-hearted tweet by fellow Leeds fan Sam Wild.

Rather than dismissing the idea out of hand, the Gladiator actor replied: “Anybody else think this is a good idea?”

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with his message being retweeted more than 700 times.

Crowe was bitten by the United bug during the club’s all-conquering years under manager Don Revie in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

As recently as Saturday, Crowe tweeted “Well, well #Leeds great result,” following the club’s surprise win at Middlesbrough.

He is already the co-owner of Australian rugby league side South Sydney Rabbitohs, who won the World Club Challenge at the weekend when they thrashed St Helens 39-0.

Italian businessman Massimo Cellino bought Leeds last year but he is currently serving a Football League ownership ban related to a tax conviction.
