Scotland eye up Cooper at Leeds United - and who else?

HEAD COACH Steve Evans says Liam Cooper’s fine form for Leeds United has attracted the attention of Scotland boss Gordon Strachan who has been in touch to discuss “two or three players at Thorp Arch.”

Cooper has excelled at centre-back this term with the 24-year-old currently wearing the captain’s arm-band due to his current partnership with Giuseppe Bellusci keeping club captain Sol Bamba out of the team.

And now Cooper could he heading for an international call up with the defender qualifying to play for Scotland through his grandparents and having already played for Scotland’s under-17s and under-19s.

Evans also admitted that Strachan had enquired about other players in addition to Cooper with Alex Mowatt and Sunderland loanee Liam Bridcutt also qualifying to play for Scotland through their grand-parents.

Bridcutt already has one cap for Scotland and Mowatt is still eligible despite having played for England under-19s and under-20s.

“The boy Cooper just seems to get better and better with every game we play,” said Evans.

“I understand he can play for my country which is a bonus because we are not overly blessed with good centre backs and when you start getting international managers asking about him then that tells you the type of form he’s in.

“I have had a chat with Gordon and he has asked me about two or three players in particular at Thorp Arch and part of that conversation involved Liam. It’s good.

“With Gordon’s team of people, he has got a few attendants around the country that watch around and Liam has been coming up above the radar as being in outstanding form in the last six weeks.

“The only person who can take credit for that is Liam himself.”
