Sports Saturday: Sheffield Wednesday promoted.... how the day unfolded

The Owls will secure second spot if they beat Wycombe Wanderers at Hillsborough and promotion to the Championship. The Blades would then be consigned to the play-offs whatever their result at Exeter.

But if the Owls slip-up then Danny Wilson’s United could nip in and snatch automatic promotion instead.

5.00pm. Final whistles going... Wednesday win 2-0, Blades draw 2-2, good draw for Bradford, 0-0 against Swindon, Town beat Yeovil 2-0 and a late Akinfenwa goal grabs a 1-1 draw at Rotherham for Northampton.

4.53pm. Exeter grab a late equaliser to make it 2-2 through Scott Bennett, but for Sheffield United their result didn’t affect things as Wednesday’s win saw them earn automatic promotion. 4.50pm. Two minutes of stoppage time..... and it’s over. WEDNESDAY are up!!!!!

4.45pm. Miguel Llera has a header brilliantly saved by Bull on the line. The party is in full swing now at Hillsborough.

4.37pm. Second goal for Huddersfield. Ward makes it 2-0 now against Yeovil. At Hillsborough, Treacy is substituted for Jermaine Johnson.

4.34pm. Far-post header from Danny Batth is whacked off the goal-line by the Wanderers defence as Wednesday come close to a third goal at Hillsborough.

4.31pm. Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Ian Bennett makes a double save at the start of the second half but Sean Morrison has a header cleared off the line at the other end. Read the YP’s Robert Gledhill give his verdict in Monday’s Yorkshire Post.

4.26pm. Rare chance for Wycombe, but Matt Bloomfield’s long-range effort goes wide of Stephen Bywater’s goal.

4.17pm. Four sides of Hillsborough are on their feet, turn to the directors box and chant the name of Milan Mandaric, the man who rescued the club from the brink of administration and turned them into a side who stand just 30 minutes away from the Championship. A touching moment.

4.10pm. Ranger heads the Owls into a 2-0 lead at Hillsborough, getting on the end of Chris Lines’s free kick.

4.08pm. Is the tide changing? The Blades are now 2-1 in front, Kevin McDonald gives the 10 men of United a glimmer of hope.

4.03pm. They are back out Hillsborough. A big - or dare I utter the word massive - 45 minutes now for Sheffield football.

3.58pm. Crowd at Hillsborough is 38,082. Without my record books here sat in the Owls press box, but I reckon that is the highest crowd anywhere in England this season, outside of the Premier League?

3.56pm. At the cricket, nearly forgot about that, such is the drama this afternoon. Yorkshire have won their first game of the season at Scarborough, beating Leicestershire by an innings. Well done lads. Fish and chips now for our man Chris Waters, lucky man, read his report in Monday’s YP.

3.45pm. Half-time whistles goes around the country. As it stands Wednesday will go up, Blades to face Stevenage in play-offs, Huddersfield to finish fourth - home advantage in second leg of semi-finals - and MK Dons fifth.

3.45pm. Huddersfield’s Danny Ward tests Sam Walker from distance but right-back Jack Hunt was Town’s most dangerous player in the first half. Town took the lead in the 45th minute, however, when Lee Novak headed home from Hunt’s cross.

3.44pm. Lifeline for the Blades. Lee Williamson nets for the 10-man visitors.

3.44pm. More good work sets Keith Treacy up this time, but his strike from the edge of the penalty area just drifts wide.

3.43pm. Nile Ranger has a ‘goal’ Although the Dons were losing at home, chalked off for offside. Antonio’s shot was parried by Bull, but the lurking Ranger was wrongly called offside.

3.39pm. Call for an Owls penalty as Lewis Buxton is hacked down on edge of the box. Free kick and booking for Craig Eastmond. Free kick comes to nothing.

3.37pm. James Beattie sent off for two-footed tackle on James Dunee. Things look bleak now for the 10-man Blades.

3.31pm. Revell fires Rotherham in front against Northampton. They can probably hear Owls fans cheering and singing at Don Valley, just down the road from Hillsborough.

3.25pm. And news of Exeter scoring against Blades sends the 37,000 Owls supporters wild. Alan Gow from 20 yards, but looked offside. Don’t think any Wednesday fans will have sympathy with that call.

3.24pm. And the goal they were promising has come. Michail Antonio drives down the centre before flicking the ball beyond Bull.

3.18pm. Twice in a minute Miguel Llera comes so close to opening scoring for Owls, but twice is denied by visiting goalkeeper Nikki Bull. Gary Madine then drives narrowly wide as Owls push forward.

3.13pm. Daniel Nardiello shot deflected on to the roof the Blades net, but all quiet down south at Exeter. No real chances at Hillsborough either.

3.00pm. And they kick-off around the country. Hold on to your seats...

2.55pm. The Owls have been led out by Jose Semedo and there are memories of the play-off final in Cardiff here, the noise is deafening at Hillsborough.

2.50pm. And for their final match at Don Valley Stadium, here’s the team news from Rotherham United...

2.49pm. Hillsborough is heaving like I haven’t seen since the Eighties. Four sides of the ground are blue and white. Aamazing atmosphere and you can just taste the tension and nerves.

2.47pm. Teams in from Valley Parade....

Bradford: McLaughlin, Ramsden, Oliver, Davies, Kozluk, Atkinson, Syers, Ravenhill, Reid, Wells, Hanson. Subs: Annerson, Smalley, Baker, Bullock, Bass.

Swindon: Foderingham, Nathan Thompson, Flint, Caddis, McEveley, Ritchie, Ferry, Risser, Holmes, Benson, Bostock. Subs: Connell, Rooney, Jonathan Smith, Storey, Chris Smith.

2.45pm. At Huddersfield, Top scorer Jordan Rhodes was again left on the bench by Town ahead of the League One play-offs. Victory today would give Simon Grayson’s side the chance of finishing fourth if MK Dons lose their final match against Walsall. Grayson named the same side which had drawn against Walsall.

2.40pm. For the Blades, Ryan Flynn in for Stephen Quinn, Cresswell and Beattie up front as Danny Wilson gambles.

2.38pm Team news in at Hillsborough, No changes for Dave Jones as he goes with same side that beat Brentford last week. Means JJ is on the bench.

1.12pm. It’s lunch at Scarborough... Our cricket man Chris Waters is all wrapped up at the seaside as Yorkshire chase victory against Leicestershire. The visitors are 190-5, a deficit of 140 as they follow on. Five more wickets needed for victory... come on Yorkshire!!!

1.10pm. In League Two, Bradford City host promoted Swindon, while Rotherham United say farewell to Don Valley as they welcome Northampton to their temporary home.

1.05pm. Don’t forget Huddersfield Town too are in action. The Terriers are at home to Yeovil and can still finish fourth, which would give them home advantage in the second leg of their play-off semi-final with MK Dons.

1pm. Good afternoon and welcome to the Yorkshire Post sports desk running commentary on what promises to be an exciting final day to the League One campaign. I was out doing my weekly shop in Hillsborough this morning and loads of people were wearing fancy dress and decked out in colours first thing.
