Things starting to click for Leeds United now – Cook

AS Lewis Cook joins up with the England Under-19s today, the midfielder admits he will do so on a high after a long overdue upturn in fortunes for Leeds United.

The 3-0 victory at Huddersfield Town, coming on the back of Cardiff City being beaten at Elland Road, means United have claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since the opening week of March.

No wonder the 3,831 fans and head coach Steve Evans were in such bullish mood at the final whistle as they celebrated Leeds’s fourth straight win against the Terriers.

“It is great to go away on a high after two wins,” said Cook, who is part of the Under-19s squad due to face Holland on Thursday and then Japan three days later.

“Things are clicking and it is great for all the lads that we can go into this international break on a real high.

“We knew we had to bounce back after Blackburn and we have done. Now, though, we need to carry it on.”

Cook impressed in midfield for Leeds, who had to overcome the early loss of Liam Cooper following a sickening collision with team-mate Scott Wootton that led to the defender being stretchered off.

But it was Alex Mowatt and Mirco Antenucci whom the midfielder felt deserved the plaudits in the wake of United’s third away win of the season.

“The first half wasn’t the best but when the chances came to score in stoppage time we did,” added Cook.

“Then, ‘Mow’ did it for the second game in a row. He is not one to brag but we are all proud of him for getting two goals like he has this week.

“I thought we pressed well and forced mistakes. I also felt we did well on the counter. Mirco did very well for the team, creating chances. And he got one himself.

“As a team, we have worked hard on the final ball. Especially Stuart (Dallas), he has been getting a lot of crosses in and he is bringing quality to the team.

“The ball he put in for the first goal was great. There is more to come from us all, as our final ball can improve.

“But the feeling in the camp is great. We are focusing on the football and everyone has been buzzing in our last two games. We want to win our next game.”
