United had to defend stoutly at the start of the game at the Keepmoat Stadium, but held firm before grabbing the lead when defender Scott Wootton scored on his debut in the 41st minute.

Billy Paynter equalised for the home side two minutes after going on as a substitute.

But a powerful header from striker Matt Smith and a penalty from Ross McCormack sealed the tie in Brian McDermott’s side’s favour, stretching Leeds’s unbeaten run at the Keepmoat to five games.

Adam Hammill put Huddersfield Town into the third round for the first time in 10 years as the home side twice came from behind to beat Charlton.

It was winger Hammill who pounced for the 82nd-minute winner, although it had looked like it would be the visitors who would progress thanks to goals from Dale Stephens and Marvin Sordell, with Town’s Joel Lynch striking in the 40th minute in between.

After Sordell’s 59th-minute strike had put Charlton 2-1 ahead, Town went close on a number of occasions before they drew level on 77 minutes when Jonathan Hogg netted.

Hammill then put Town ahead for the first time on the night and went close to adding some further gloss in the final moments.

Hull City survived a major scare at Leyton Orient, requiring extra time to progress.

Tigers manager Steve Bruce – mindful of this weekend’s trip to Manchester City – had selected a completely different line-up for last night’s trip to Brisbane Road and it nearly backfired.

But Robbie Brady came off the bench for the second half of extra-time and the Republic of Ireland international provided the impact desired by his manager, netting scarcely more than a minute after his introduction to secure fortuitous progress for the Tigers.

Barnsley, already struggling in the Championship, found no reprieve in the knockout format, going down 5-1 at home to Premier League Southampton.

Steven Davis scored the opener for the visitors in the 26th minute, before Jay Rodriguez doubled the lead shortly after the break.

Barnsley gave themselves a lifeline in the 54th minute through captain Stephen Dawson, but the two-goal deficit was restored in the 66th minute through Emmanuel Mayuka.

Davis added a fourth from the penalty spot with Gaston Ramirez making it 5-1.
