Sunderland are ready to sell Buckley this summer, a year after signing him from Brighton, but they have already rejected offers to take the 25-year-old on loan and will look to pull in a seven-figure fee for him.

Buckley is interesting a number of Championship clubs and Leeds have included him on a shortlist of options as they fight to secure a winger in time for the start of the season.

Head coach Uwe Rosler is looking for a player to fill the left side of his three-man attack and has been focusing on that position throughout the summer.

Leeds were close to landing Catania’s Raphael Martinho last week but ended their interest after speaking with the Brazilian and they are working to what Rosler called a “restricted” budget after invested more than £2m in striker Chris Wood.

United are currently attempting to remove strikers Steve Morison and Nicky Ajose from the wage bill at Elland Road.

Sunderland paid a reported £2.5m for Buckley last August but did not use him regularly in the second half of last season and are ready to cut their losses.

The cost of a full-time deal might force Leeds to look elsewhere unless Sunderland agree to loan Buckley with a view to a permanent transfer.
