Warnock’s warning over danger the Posh will pose

ANY doubts that the Championship would once again be the hardest division to predict this season were surely blown away in the opening week.

Not only is there just one side boasting a maximum six points but shocks have been in abundance across both opening rounds as unfancied teams beat those expecting to lead the chase for the Premier League.

For Leeds United, the contrast between their own two performances could not have been more marked.

A week ago, Neil Warnock’s side were hugely impressive in seeing off a Wolves side determined to make their mark following relegation from the top flight.

By Tuesday night, however, United were a pale imitation of the team that had beaten Wolves as Blackpool, now the only side with a 100 per cent record after two games, dominated proceedings much more than the final 2-1 score suggested.

The challenge for Warnock ahead of today’s trip to Peterborough United is to inspire a big improvement and banish any memory of the lesson handed out in midweek at the seaside by Ian Holloway’s men.

He said: “People talk about Peterborough but can you imagine what it will be like in their dressing room? They are going to die to get a result and it is going to be as hard a game as there is.

“Leave alone the idea that we are going to be favourites. Peterborough are a good side and I watched them a few times last year.

“The minimum we have got to do is be at 100 per cent and if you get beaten by a better team then you take your hat off to them, just like Tuesday night when Blackpool were better than us.”

Leeds will again make the trip without Paul Green after the former Doncaster Rovers midfielder was ruled out for eight weeks with a knee injury.

One option under consideration by Warnock is for El-Hadji Diouf, who is still considering a 12-month contract offer, to be handed a first start of the season.

On Tuesday night, Aidy White was switched to the right flank but failed to make an impact so could return to the back four.

Otherwise, the other possible changes are Lee Peltier moving to his usual right-back role to allow Tom Lees to continue in the centre with Jason Pearce.

Meanwhile, Warnock has confirmed that United are unlikely to see knee-injury victim Davide Somma until October at the earliest.
