1) Bradford City (up two)

Bradford have found a new energy, based primarily on the team’s brilliant defensive record.

With a structure now firmly in place, they have shot up the table. City have not conceded a goal for over a month, dating back to the 1-1 draw against Wigan Athletic on October 24.

It was no surprise to see them win 2-0 against Scunthorpe on their travels at the weekend, and Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw with Coventry was probably a good result, given how well their opposition are doing in the league.

Bradford are now sixth. Maintain that in the run up to January and they may finally find a way out of the third tier.

2) Middlesbrough (up three)

WWWWLW

By any stretch of the imagination, Middlesbrough’s home game against Queens Park Rangers was a tough task.

Aitor Karanka has been criticised in the past for a negative playing style, which meant it would be interesting to see how his side managed to break down a team playing in a conservative manner themselves.

QPR had no striker in their line-up, which showed Kevin Blackwell and the absent Neil Warnock were clearly going for a point.

However, Boro kept going and managed to nick the victory and the three points. It showed a character that can only bode well for them this season.

3) Sheffield Wednesday (up three)

WWWDLW

Ask anyone who was in attendance at Hillsborough on Saturday and they will express how impressive Huddersfield Town were for 78 minutes of the game.

What was even more impressive was that Carlos Carvahal made exactly the right substitutions to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 win.

Lucas Joao scored a stunning double after winning his first caps for Portugal to help Wednesday earn the three points.

Being able to throw on Gary Hooper and Lewis McGugan alongside him showed Wednesday’s strength in depth. They are now up to eighth.

4) Doncaster Rovers (down two)

LWWWLW

Doncaster Rovers are probably unfortunate to drop down the Power Rankings, having blown away Chesterfield with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night.

However, they struggled against Rochdale, losing 2-0, and it was a slight step back after such a good recent run.

Even with that defeat, Rovers have improved considerably since Darren Ferguson took charge. There is a huge difference in comparison with the club’s early season struggles.

They now travel to League One leaders Coventry on Saturday, a tough test for any side.

5) Hull City (down four)

WWWWWD

Hull City’s winning streak was curtailed on Saturday in a draw against Bristol City.

They went a goal behind initially but fought back well to secure the point.

Steve Bruce’s side also remain atop the Championship, despite the draw, and their recent form has, overall, been staggering.

That is why they occupy such a high spot despite not winning. They remain Yorkshire’s best hope of getting a team into the Premier League for next season.

6) Rotherham United (up four)

DLLLLW

One swallow does not make a summer, but Rotherham’s victory against Leeds United will have tasted sweet for the club’s fans and Neil Redfearn.

Redfearn was returning to his former club, and to get one over owner Massimo Cellino would have been a big moment for him, given how Cellino treated him towards the end of his reign.

It was also the first time Rotherham have won since Redfearn took charge.

They have made some sensible additions and lifted themselves off bottom spot in the league. Keep it up, and the win could be the start of something big.

7) FC Halifax Town (up four)

DWLLLW

The dismissal of Darren Kelly seems to have, on paper, worked out for Halifax Town.

Their form prior to Kelly’s departure was dreadful, with the defence showing all the solidity of a glass of water.

By way of contrast, on Saturday they travelled to Gateshead and came away with a massive 4-1 away victory.

They are still bottom of the National League, but rightfully rise up the rankings for an excellent display.

8) Barnsley (up four)

LLWLWL

It was a real shame for Barnsley that they could not follow up Saturday’s victory against Oldham with another against Peterborough.

On Tuesday night they fell to a 3-2 defeat, with Saturday’s hero Kevin Long being sent off.

The trip to Peterborough was a tough one, to say the least, with the Tykes’ opposition flying high in League One.

Just getting points on the board on Saturday deservedly knocks them up the rankings, given their recent run of eight losses in a row in the league. The epic manner of their victory against Oldham is likely to live on for a while for fans of the Oakwell side.

9) Huddersfield Town (-)

WLLDLL

As mentioned earlier, Town’s performance against Sheffield Wednesday has drawn plaudits, despite the eventual loss.

David Wagner’s ‘gegenpressing’ style clearly improved his side’s display, which bodes well going forward.

The Terriers are hovering worryingly close to the relegation zone, and with a tough run ahead of them, including games against Middlesbrough and a trip to high-flying Birmingham City, they will have to hope that improvement carries on.

At the least, they deserve to retain their place for what was a clear improvement on Chris Powell’s days.

10) Leeds United (down six)

DDLWWL

Just when things were looking up at Elland Road, the club took an unfortunate step backwards.

Hide Ad

The game against Rotherham on Saturday should have been immensely winnable for the Whites, coming up against a team that had not won in six.

However, they performed poorly and allowed their opposition to take the lead, and were unable to find a response.

Any talk of a top ten finish should now go out the window at Leeds - they need to improve the squad to the extent that these games are a near given victory before eyeing up the Championship’s more lofty positions.

11) Sheffield United (down four)

LWLDDL

Sheffield United have not been good, and they continue not to be particularly good, especially when their pre-season expectations are factored in.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

This is a club that most assumed would be gunning for automatic promotion, but they now sit 12th in League One after Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to Shrewsbury.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Walsall also spoke for an unfortunate recent reality - wins have been exceptionally hard to find recently.

Their most recent came against Worcester City in the FA Cup. Considerable room for improvement for Nigel Adkins’s side.

12) Guiseley (down four)

LWWLLL

Guiseley are probably unfortunate to drop down the Power Rankings, having travelled to Tranmere at the weekend and come away with a very commendable 2-1 loss.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

They’ve been on an unfortunate run of facing up against very difficult opposition. The visit of Bromley on Saturday could be a good place to get a victory.

It has to be remembered that Guiseley are a part-time side in a league filled with full-time opposition.

Staying in the division will almost eternally be the aim, and with a big gap between them and the relegation zone, they are doing a decent job of it, despite recent results.

13) York City (-)

LLLLLL

As mentioned last week, Jackie McNamara still needs time to implement his ideas.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

However, two losses over four days have done nothing to help York City’s clear battle against relegation.

The 6-0 defeat to Portsmouth will have been particularly damaging, a staggering loss that will do nothing to help morale.

Pompey are fourth in the league. It does not get any easier for City, who host fifth-placed Accrington Stanley on Saturday.
