Leeds United plot Yorkshire raid for midfielder, Pundit claims big guns 'crave' Elland Road ace

Leeds United are interested in signing Barnsley talent Callum Styles this summer.

That’s according to Football League World, who suggest that the Whites have identified the 21-year-old as a potential transfer target.

The midfielder has established himself as a key feature of the Tykes’ promotion-chasing side this term, and has made 36 appearances in the Championship so far, scoring four goals and assisting three more.

Those displays have supposedly alerted the Whites, who are now keeping tabs on the player.

But Marcelo Bielsa’s men aren’t the only club interested in Styles, with Southampton and Norwich City also said to be keen on making a move if Barnsley fail to win promotion to the top flight.

Interest in the precocious talent, who can play on the left or in the centre of midfield, is understandable given his potential and his recent run of form.

As recently as February, he was handed the EFL’s Young Player of the Month award.

Elsewhere, Alex McLeish has argued that Chelsea are craving a player like Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season in the top flight, and has established himself as a fixture of England’s starting lineup in his signature deep-lying midfield role.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Scotland boss McLeish argued that he is just the kind of talent that the Blues are missing.

He said: “Chelsea don’t really have that. It’s more of the Brazilians and other nationalities that are playing in their midfield, such as Croatians.

“I would think that Chelsea would crave somebody like that. Don’t forget, they’ve got a brilliant young Scot coming through in Billy Gilmour.

“He could perhaps do that same job when his manager feels he’s ready and strong enough to cope with the Premier League.

“Also, when you think of Declan Rice who’s been linked with Chelsea for a long time. You would say Phillips and Rice are that kind of player who would suit Chelsea.

“They’re a wee bit different styles but primarily the same type of position.”
