Leeds United transfer news: Midfielder opens door for Elland Road move, Pundit urges Whites to sign EPL rising star

Leeds United were initially linked with a move for Feyenoord midfielder Orkun Kokcu earlier this year.

Along with Leicester City, the Whites were said to be keen on the Turkish international, while Sky Sports have also suggested that Everton and Arsenal are keen on the player.

Despite interest seemingly being both widespread and of a high profile, however, Kokcu is still on the books at Feyenoord – or at least he is for the time being.

Speaking in a recent interview with continental publication Voetbal International, he said: “I still have a contract until 2025, but the situation has changed.

“Feyenoord have been very open about the financial situation, and it is clear that the club is ending up in the minus.

“If a club comes to me with a good story and Feyenoord can make money from it, I can imagine that I will listen to it.”

A transfer is certainly not out of the realms of possibility, therefore, especially as summer approaches.

The Coronavirus pandemic has hit Feyenoord hard, and the ongoing financial instability could be a key factor in convincing them to sell some of their key assets, of which Kokcu is definitely one.

The 20-year-old missed a significant amount of game time around the turn of the year due to an ankle injury, but has reestablished himself in the centre of midfield in recent weeks, and already has two caps for his country.

Elsewhere, former Leeds striker Noel Whelan has urged the club to make a move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.

The 21-year-old has impressed during a loan spell with struggling West Brom this season, but Whelan believes he can go on to emulate the success that fellow Stamford Bridge academy product Mason Mount has enjoyed in recent seasons.

He told Football Insider: “It wouldn’t surprise me if there was a queue of Premier League clubs after him if West Brom get relegated in the summer.

“I saw the class in him last season in the Championship. I could see what a good player he was going to be. He’s got bravery on the ball, great turn of pace, strength, good eye for a pass, he’s always involved.

“That’s what I like about the player. Even though he is young, he’s very much in the mould of Mason Mount. He’s got that kind of attitude where he wants to be the star, the next Mount, he wants to be the player who gets hold of the game and is always making things happen.

“He’s brave, he makes himself available, he’s got no fear. That’s the way it should be.

“That’s really impressive for someone as young as that, especially given where they are in the league. There’s a lot of pressure on players in those situations in every single game.

“If they go down, there will be a queue for his signature and hopefully Leeds United will be looking at him as well because he’s a great player.”
