Leeds United’s Tyler Roberts hoping to get chance to impress in Premier League

IN an ideal world, Tyler Roberts would now be preparing for the European Championships with Wales – fresh from securing a joyous promotion with Leeds United.

Instead, the fulfilment of both cherished ambitions remain very much on hold.

The striker is clinging onto the hope that at some point in the not-too-distant future, Leeds will return to action and successfully negotiate their final nine Championship matches of 2019-20 en route to their return to the top table of English football after 16 long years.

Internationally, Roberts and his Wales team-mates must wait until next summer for the Euros, with the competition being one of the high-profile casualties of the Covid-19 pandemic which has wreaked havoc upon the sporting calendar for 2020.

That the Leeds forward could head into those championships with a full season of top-flight experience under his belt – and potentially emerge as one of the mainstays of Ryan Giggs’s side – is something not lost on him.

He said: “You have got to look at the positives, it could work in my favour where I have a whole season to show them what I am about.

“I just got a message (from Giggs) to stay safe and to follow the guidelines. We aren’t going to the Euros. I know it is difficult, but we are still going (next summer) and it’s something to look forward to.

“If the season had ended now, we’d have been going off to camp to get ready for it and the European Championships are a big thing. But we will get back there.”

On how he is coping with lockdown ahead of Leeds returning to action, he added: “I don’t think it’s so much about having to keep yourself mentally motivated, we were working towards something we’ve been trying to get for so long.

“There’s a lot on the line for us so if we started slacking off or not doing the full fitness sessions we’ll not be as fit when we come back and it could stop us getting promoted.”

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
