The Whites sit top of the Championship with 37 of their 46 matches played, but English professional football has been put on hold until at least April 30 – almost certainly longer – while the country deals with the impact of coronavirus.

The worry for Leeds fans is that despite the will of the authorities to avoid that, the campaign has to be abandoned and that promotion and relegation are put on hold too.

“I can't see it happening and I hope it won't happen,” said Polish midfielder Klich. “I just want to play nine games and finish the season, that's it.

“Everyone wants to play those games and none of us want to be promoted to the Premier League now, we want to go up after 46 games.

“I have no idea how but there's nine games left so we need three weeks, one month, and we can finish. We can go somewhere, we can go and play in Dubai where it's nice weather (to get the games played). I have no idea. It's difficult, it's not an easy situation.

“There are people who know better than me how to deal with it and they will draw something up.

“I'm watching the news every day. Different solutions, different plans. I hope we're going to end the season. I don't know who wants to finish the season more, us or Liverpool! Let's wait and see.

“I saw Harry Kane said the season should be cancelled but I know why he wants that.”

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear has spoken about the need to protect the integrity of the league, and that would be Klich's concern if they were promoted without another ball being kicked.

“No one wants that,” he said. “I can imagine how people would talk. We feel strong and we know we can do it.

“We want to prove we can win the league after 46 games, not 37 and with the help of the coronavirus. Hopefully we can be on the pitch soon.”

Whatever is decided, Klich says he will go along with it, but he hopes the solution allows fans inside Elland Road to share in what will be a huge celebration if Leeds win promotion back to the Premier League after 16 years away.

“I think we have to go along (with whatever is decided),” he said. “We're football players, we're not scientists or doctors, we have no idea how it's going to work but I can guarantee we, Liverpool and West Brom want to finish the season as soon as possible.

“If we went up and couldn't celebrate with the fans it would be very painful. On the other hand I think everyone would enjoy next season.

“If it has to happen then we have nothing to say about it but I would rather finish the games with the fans in the stadium and hopefully we could celebrate with them as well.

“There's still nine games to go, we don't want to make the mistake of last season.”
