LEEDS UNITED manager Neil Redfearn admits his side have “great confidence” as they look to bring down another Championship high-flier.

He had plenty of praise this afternoon for opposite number Mick McCarthy ahead of Saturday’s trip to second-placed Ipswich.

The ex-Republic of Ireland boss has seen his side lose just once since August to affirm their promotion credentials.

It is a third tough assignment in as many weeks for Leeds given they have faced sixth-placed Blackburn Rovers and Derby County.

However, Saturday’s impressive 2-0 win over leaders Derby - a second victory in three matches - has buoyed them significantly.

“It seems to have fallen that way around - we’re playing all the top sides,” added Redfearn, whose team currently sit in 15th.

“He’s done brilliant has Mick McCarthy; they’re having a great season and Mick’s trying to put a side together.

“They had a season where he got his feet under the table and now they’re producing what he wants them to produce.

“It’s a typical Mick McCarthy side. It’ll be a tough game for us.

“We’re in the middle of some tough games but we’re improving in a tough spell which is great credit to the lads.

“We’ve still got a long way to go and a lot to do.

“I know from experience that football throws up different quirks.

“Games you should expect to win you get beat in. Games you don’t expect to get anything from, you win.

“I’m pleased with what they’re doing and how they’ve applied themselves. “The result on Saturday and the performance was a great confidence booster.”

Meanwhile, Redfearn says he is closing in on finally appointing his assistant - four weeks after taking over the Elland Road hotseat.

He has remained patient in waiting to get the correct man in place but is nearing being able to secure his target, believed to be Huddersfield Town’s Steve Thompson.

Redfearn explained: “We’re getting to that point now where hopefully something will give.

“It has dragged on but it’s dragged on for the right reasons - because we’ve done it properly.

“We’ve tried to do the right thing and go through the front door.

“The club has been in discussions with another club.”
